What Is ACSR Cable?

ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) cable is a type of electrical cable typically used for overhead power transmission. ACSR cable consists of a central core of steel wires surrounded by aluminum wires. The steel core provides the strength needed for the cable to support its weight, while the aluminum wires are used to conduct electrical current.

By varying the relative proportions of aluminum and steel, the characteristics required for any particular application can be achieved. Higher U.T.S. can be achieved by increasing the steel content, and higher current-carrying capacity can be achieved by increasing the aluminum content.

Application of ACSR Cable

ACSR cable is used as a bare overhead transmission conductor and as a primary and secondary distribution conductor and as a messenger support. ACSR cable offers optimal strength for line design. The variable stranding of the steel core allows for achieving the desired strength without sacrificing ampacity.
