What is the ACAR driver?

The use of ACAR (ALUMINUM ALLOY CONDUCTOR REINFORCED) conductors is a very attractive option for some bare transmission and distribution lines. Aluminum Alloy 6201 wires mechanically reinforce the core conductor, serving the same purpose as steel in ACSR, but with a much higher ampacity. Their combination with 1350-H19 aluminum wires results in a good and attractive balance of mechanical strength and electrical performance.

Construction of the ACAR conductor

1350-H19 aluminum alloy strands, concentrically stranded around a 6201 aluminum alloy core. Although the alloy strands generally constitute the core of the cable, in some constructions they are distributed in layers along the 1350 H19 aluminum (alloy) strands.

For equal weight, ACAR offers greater strength and ampacity than ACSR.
